Clint Eastwood

Hollywood movies have always fascinated me. Maybe more so because of the stars or the way the pictures were filmed / produced. Either way, the result was that I was hooked.

Of all the stars, I would certainly say that Clint Eastwood is in a class of his own – lean and tall – the perfect icon of an American. I am still thrilled by his performance in the first “Dirty Harry” movie, where he (lives) plays the role Inspector Harry Callahan immortalizing the character. I have seen the advertisements for the pic still etched in my memory –

It says: “They don’t assign him to cases, they just turn him loose...” and how about this?: “He doesn’t break open cases, he just smashes them”. I haven’t come across another U.S. actor who has had such an explosive line going on for him on the movie poster.

The movie also features Andy Robinson, playing the villain (to such perfection, that he never had another offer to act in the movies). The movie packs such super-charged excitement. Right from frame one, the picture just races through with the stellar performances of the lead characters. Be it the bank robbery in the initial reels of the film, the search for the killer at the stadium, when the cop is made to run, literally gasping for his breath, or the final gun battle at the sand quarry.

The lines from the film: “I know what you’re thinking, punk; whether I fired six shots or only five. Well, in all this excitement, I kind’a lost track of it myself. But this being a .44 magnum - the most powerful handgun in the world, and would blow your head clean off, you can ask yourself a question: “Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya, punk?”” made so famous by Clint Eastwood just puts a smile on your face when you hear it in the beginning of the film. Again, when the same lines are repeated with such venom in the climax of the picture, you can feel the helplessness the cop feels, who is unable to do justice because of the rights / liberties that exist for the killer and that exist for the poor girl who has been brutally murdered. A thoroughly enjoyable movie..
